Christian Falsnaes

Christian Falsnaes (b. 1980 in Copenhagen, living in Berlin) studied philosophy at the University of Copenhagen and Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (2005–2010). Falsnaes, in his artistic practice, explores different kinds of media such as painting, drawing, collage, installation and video. However, at the center of his work stand performance and the creation of various forms of social interaction. In his latest works, Falsnaes examines the authorship of works of art. They are located at the interface between performance and other media such as drawing, photography, video and painting and deal with the owners of works of art, the art collectors. The work only exists through the act of purchase and the execution of his instructions by the buyers, who thus become co-producers. In Time/Line/Movement (since 2013), the artist passes the control and authorship of his work to the collectors. It is a series of drawings, which the buyers first copy by drawing and afterwards burn. The act of burning is photographically recorded. The interpretation becomes the original, which again will be copied and burned in case of a resale.

In 2008, he received the H13 Lower Austria Performance Prize by the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich in Vienna. Most recently his works were shown at, among others, Akademie der Künste, Berlin (2014); Museum Bärengasse, Zurich (2014); Fotografisk Center, Copenhagen (2014); KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2013); Bonner Kunstverein (2013); Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2013); Salzburger Kunstverein (2013); Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen (2013); Haus am Waldsee, Berlin (2013); Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck (2012); W139, Amsterdam (2012).
