Thomas Zipp

Thomas Zipp (*1966 in Heppenheim, living and working in Berlin) works on the topics of the unconscious, expanded consciousness, music, science and religion and realizes them mainly in painting and drawing. Zipp’s works often appear disconnected from conventional forms of society, irrational and dreamy, even uncanny. His work is characterized by a morbid charm. The edition GODMACHINE shows a Koren helmet, as it is used in Zipp’s performance The World’s most complete Congress of Ritatin Treatments. The performance imitates the use of the so-called God Helmet, which simulates an altered magnetic field of the Earth. With the generated electromagnetic forces the brains of the test persons are stimulated and in this way paranormal phenomena can be experienced. The actors of this performance execute some kind of ritual. Neither the persons in their roles, nor the space in its function are clearly defined. The boundaries between hospital, church, laboratory and private quarters are blurred. Since 2008, Zipp teaches painting and mutimedia at the University of the Arts in Berlin.

Most recently his work was shown at, among others, Deichtorhallen Hamburg (2015); 55th Venice Biennale (2013); Oldenburger Kunstverein (2012); Kunstraum Innsbruck (2011); Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2010); Kunsthalle Bremen (2007); MoMA PS1, New York (2006); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2005); Kunsthaus Essen (2001).
