Nan Hoover

Nan Hoover (*1931 in New York, †2008 in Berlin) is a pioneer of video, light, and performance art. Although her background was in painting and drawing, she deliberately turned away from traditional artistic media and began to work with sun reflections and shadows. In the early 1970s, she created her first performances and light installations, which are inseparable from her video art. Her poetic videos demand a concentrated engagement with the process of seeing and perceiving. From 1987 to 1996, Hoover was a professor of Film and Video at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and taught mixed media at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam from 1998 till 1999.
