Foundling (Erin Lang), video still, 2024

Foundling is a musical project by Canadian artist Erin Lang, which has come together in its current formation as an international band based in Berlin. The ensemble – Lang (vocals, electric bass, harp), David Georgos (synthesizer, programming), Samuel Hall (percussion, crystallophone), Peter Hanson (saxophone, flute), and Dino Karlis (percussion, drums) – weaves experimental psychedelic soundscapes. Their blend of dream pop, electronic tropicalismo, and ambient music, crafted through an eclectic array of instruments, spans four studio albums and extends into sound art and film soundtracks. Their latest album, Equilibria (2024), is characterized by soft vocals, tuned percussion, saxophone, and vintage synthesizers. The album’s romantic compositions evoke diverse eras, combining elements of early 20th-century film music with 1960s extravagance and 1980s smooth jazz. Expanding on Equilibria, Foundling developed Artemisia, an experimental ambient EP featuring harp and flute.

The cinematic qualities of Foundling’s work are reflected in frequent collaborations with filmmakers, dancers, poets, and visual artists. Notable projects include the soundtrack for Uprooted (2021), a ZDF/ARTE documentary investigating the controversial use of tropical timber in the construction of the 2021 Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, and a sound collage for Viendo Voces (2021), a multidisciplinary project at Museo Experimental El Eco in Mexico City. Foundling has collaborated with renowned music producers such as Mario Thaler (The Notwist, Lali Puna, Console), Martin Gretschmann (Acid Pauli, Console), Roger O’Donnell (The Cure), Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Timber Timbre), David Bryant (Godspeed You! Black Emperor), and Lasse Mårtén (Lykke Li, Jónsi, Primal Scream). Internationally, the band has performed in prestigious venues, including the Berlin Philharmonie, Le Grand Rex in Paris, and The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen.

At Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), Foundling will conclude the finissage of the exhibition by Kiri Dalena with a live concert, establishing a unique dialogue with the artist’s work.
