Ciprian Mureşan

Religion, post-communism, and childhood are frequent topics addressed in Ciprian Mureșan’s (*1977 in Dej/Romania, lives in Cluj/Romania) multimedia works, which often include references to art, film, and literary history. With excerpts from canonical works, he demystifies the significance of Western European cultural and artistic production, especially with regard to the relationship between Eastern and Western Europe. The series Sketches for a Recycled Lenin Statue (2020) reflects the production of contradictory meaning in Eastern European post-communist societies. The drawings show dismantled and destroyed video stills in a fragmented manner and devoid of context, which monumentalize Lenin in a new way.

Mureșan is co-editor of the magazine Version and has been on the editorial board of the art magazine IDEA arts + society since 2005. His work has been shown in numerous international group and solo exhibitions, including at: Center for Contemporary Art, Ljubljana (2019); S.M.A.K., Gent / Belgium (2018); Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna (2015); Ludwig Museum - Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest (2015; 2012); Tate Modern, London (2012); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2010); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2010); Sydney Biennale (2010); Romanian Pavilion, Venice Biennale (2009); Athens Biennale (2007).
