Rosemarie Trockel

The artistic work of Rosemarie Trockel (*1952 in Schwerte, living and working in Cologne) including drawing, painting, installation, sculpture, photography and video reflects social issues and challenges assumptions underlying the Western philosophical, theological and scientific discourses. By distancing herself from the systems that define the social and sexual identity of women, she attacks cultural gender constraints and standards. Her imagery is a transformation and juxtaposition of “symbols” in the fields of science, consumerism and everyday life, which become a kind of inventory, with questions about sexuality, identity and oeuvre being of particular importance. Atheismus stands in succession to a series of digital prints, in which she assembles her own work with manipulated photos from other people’s youth.

Her works were shown, among others, at Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2016); Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2015); Serpentine Gallery, London (2013); New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (2012); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2012); Kunsthalle Zurich (2012); documenta 13 und 10, Kassel (2012, 1997); Venice Biennale (2011, 1999, 1996); Skulptur Projekte Münster 07 (2007); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2005/06); Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt/Main (2003); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2001), German Pavilion, Venice Biennale (1999), Istanbul Biennial (1999, 1995); Kunsthalle Hamburg (1998).
