Steyerl has participated in debates around the Documentary Turn in the 1990s significantly. Her postcolonial and feminist critique of representation, defined by a film practice, operates in so doing with strategies of fictionalization. In Lovely Andrea, she searches for a series of photographs that she posed as a student in Japan as a “rope bondage” model. Found footage of Spiderman as well as of tied up prisoners at Guantánamo Bay associatively links pornographical genre and autobiography with the current political situation.
