Nam June Paik

Nam June Paik (*1932 in Seoul, †2006 in Miami) was a pioneer of video art and a key figure in the international Fluxus movement. Paik explored the intersection of art, technology, and popular culture in music, performances, and video installations. As early as 1963, he began experimenting with the manipulation of televised images, creating his first installations using television sets to critique the medium with its own means. In 1969, together with Shuya Abe (*1932 in Miyagi Prefecture / Japan), he developed a video synthesizer to create non-representational images, known as the Paik/Abe Synthesizer. He also experimented with live television broadcasts via satellite.
