Alongside his artistic practice, Peter Weibel (*1944 in Odessa / Ukraine, †2023 in Karlsruhe / Germany) is also active as a curator and theorist of art and media. Proceeding from semiotic and linguistic considerations, he developed an artistic language that led him from experimental literature to performance in 1965. In his performances, he investigates the relationship of language and body to film, video, and sound, as well as to interactive, electronic spaces. He critically analyzes how such media function within the constructions of reality and temporality. Weibel’s video works can be understood as applied media theory. In addition to his performance practice, Expanded Cinema forms the background of his works. From 1999 to 2023, he has been Artistic and Scientific Director of the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) in Karlsruhe / Germany.
