Anca Benera & Arnold Estefán
Anca Benera and Arnold Estefán engage in a research-oriented and interdisciplinary artistic practice focusing on historical, social, and geopolitical narratives and the power structures that underpin them. In their recent projects, such as the solo exhibition Rehearsals for Peace at the n.b.k. Showroom (2023), they examine ecological issues at the intersection of environmental concerns and military affairs. The new work Perpetual Harvest (2024), created specifically for the n.b.k. Editions series, refers to ancient harvest rituals at risk of extinction, like straw weaving in Romania. This practice involves weaving the last wheat stalks from a harvested field and storing them in farmhouses during winter to preserve the harvest spirit for the spring sowing. Their work also critiques the ongoing militarization of everyday life and the use of food and water supplies as instruments of warfare.
Anca Benera (*1977 in Constanța / Romania) and Arnold Estefán (*1978 in Târgu Secuiesc / Romania)have collaborated creatively since 2012, based in Bucharest and Vienna. In 2022, they were honored with the Birgit Jürgenssen Award by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Art, Culture, Civil Service and Sport. Their work has been showcased internationally at venues including the Klima Biennale, Vienna (2024); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2023); Museum Tinguely, Basel (2023); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2023); Biennale Matter of Art, Prague (2022); Trafó Galéria, Budapest (solo, 2021); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2021); and MUCEM, Marseille (2019).
