Anri Sala
Anri Sala’s artistic practice delves into the relationships between music, literature, architecture, and film, interweaving elements from these media in complex and intuitive ways, where one medium often emulates the characteristics of another. For example, his recording Contes de sons qui se prennent pour un autre, released as an LP, draws inspiration from surface noise. According to Sala, “I wanted to compose a soundtrack that mostly sounds, when played on the vinyl, like one is only listening to the physical attributes of the medium itself: the sound of the static crackling of the vinyl played by the stylus. As if it was contact music. However, in the course of the composition the crackling starts to evolve, gradually taking the shape of other sounds. One hears hints of percussion and sometimes even distant sounds, like fragments of ghostly music.” In this recording, Sala begins with the sound of surface noise and gradually layers it with characteristics from other sounds. A limited edition of twelve LPs by the artist was released as part of the n.b.k. Records series, each featuring a unique drawing by Sala.
Anri Sala has participated in numerous exhibitions and biennials worldwide, including the Havanna Biennale (2015); Sharjah Biennale (2013); Gwangju Biennale (2012); Documenta 13 (2012); São Paulo Biennale (2010); Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2007); and Berlin Biennale (2006). In 2013, he represented France at the Venice Biennale with his exhibition Ravel Ravel Unravel.
n.b.k. Records is a collaboration between Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and Ediciones Inauditas, publishing LPs of works by various visual artists. Each LP is a work of art in itself.
