Bea Schlingelhoff

Bea Schlingelhoff’s artistic practice encompasses drawing, sculpture, typography, and site-specific interventions. It often starts with extensive research into the history and structure of her exhibition venues. Formally, her works navigate between the traditional concept of the artwork and its display. In her approach, typography acts as a supportive medium that conveys language and content. From an art historical perspective, typography is frequently perceived as a secondary art form, and its significance is often underestimated. Schlingelhoff creates typefaces that, much like her interventions at institutions, engage with form, history, and sociopolitical themes. For instance, in her series Women Against Hitler (2017), she developed typefaces honoring women who resisted National Socialism. Especially for the n.b.k. Edition program and based on her solo exhibition at the n.b.k. Accounting Confessions (2023), the artist has developed a new digital typography dedicates to Muriel Siebert - an American stockbroker who was the first woman to become a member of the New York Stock Exchange.

Recent solo exhibitions of Bea Schlingelhoff’s (lives and works in Zurich) work have been held at Neues Berliner Kunstverein (2023); Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2022); Kunstverein Munich (2021); Museum des Landes Glarus, Näfels / Switzerland (2019), and Schloss, Oslo (2018). Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions, including at Bergen Kunsthall (2021); Kunsthalle Zürich; Kunsthalle Basel; Kunsthaus Glarus (all 2020); Kölnischer Kunstverein (2019); and Manifesta, Genk (2012). In 2023, Schlingelhoff received the Prix de la Société des Arts de Genève. She has been a faculty member at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) since 2011.
