Hito Steyerl
Hito Steyerl (*1966 in Munich, living and working in Berlin) in her video works explores developments and issues of feminism, capitalism and migration as well as modern (digital) pop culture. In her video works, Steyerl draws on both the aesthetics of mass culture and the Internet as well as motifs from politics, (video) art, documentary and independent film. The consecutive image sequences, strung together in changing tempos are first made accessible in an associative way and develop their own rhythm, at the same time they follow a narrative structure. Alongside socio-political issues, her work always addresses the possibility and limitation of the own medium. In the work After the Crash, Steyerl examines, by employing the allegory of plane wrecks, the worldwide economic crisis. Since 2011, she is a professor of film and video (new media) at the University of Arts in Berlin. Her works were most recently shown at, among others, 56th und 55th Venice Biennale (2015, 2013); Artist Space, New York (2015); Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London (2014); Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2014); Kunstverein Stuttgart (2014); Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2013); Taipei Biennial (2010); Gwangju Biennale (2010); dOCUMENTA 12, Kassel (2007); Manifesta 5, San Sebastian (2004).
